What stayed with me most was the thoughtful welcome, especially the complimentary bottle of wine and platter of fruit, crackers, and cheese for guests staying a week or longer. The hotel already has a calm, secluded setting that’s lovely for rest and reflection, along with a clean, comfortable, well-prepared room. The staff, from hosts to servers, were warm, attentive, and professional in a sincerely kind way. A couple of small additions could make the experience even better: a signature scent through the property and a TV system that lets guests Chromecast or stream from phone apps. Many memorable hotels have a subtle fragrance that greets you at the entrance and carries through the lobby, halls, dining spaces, and rooms. Being able to stream personal content has also become a convenience many travelers appreciate. This was my first visit to the Fairway Hotel & Spa, and I had a wonderful time. It already offers hospitality, comfort, and a serene environment, and those upgrades could make the stay even more memorable.

It works well for small work events, with parking, accommodation and good food all together. The place feels polished enough for a special outing, but still relaxed and welcoming. Even if you’re not there to golf, the quiet, course views and outdoor tables make it a lovely spot for lunch, coffee or a drink at sunset. The spa is also a popular choice for birthday treats or a much-needed break.

The restaurant was my reason for visiting, and it’s a great-looking venue. The gardens are neatly kept, and inside it’s well ventilated and warm when the weather turns cold. There are lots of TV screens, the waiters are on the ball, and the bathrooms are good, with plenty of lockers and showers for golfers. I didn’t use the golf course, spa or hotel.

We were left waiting 20 minutes before asking for a menu, then had to get someone’s attention another 20 minutes later to order. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful, and their attitude really bothered us. I asked the waiter for honey for my coffee, even though I’d seen some on the counter, and was told they had none, so we got it ourselves. Unless you’re a golf club member, you apparently can’t walk on or around the grounds. I don’t understand how this hotel has such a high rating. This was during the last five days of our South Africa holiday.

The executive suite looks beautiful, but too many things weren’t working. The bathroom lights were out, the bath drained while we tried to fill it, and we couldn’t find any remotes. I reported the lights and bath problems twice during our stay and got no help. We were also charged R400 per plate for food without anyone checking with us first. I’d booked the suite a month ahead for one night at R2580.00, called five times to confirm and pay, and planned the stay for over a month. When I raised the problems with the manager the next morning, he shrugged me off and told me to email Marketing. John, the customer service manager, was no help and showed no interest in assisting. Maybe it was just how I looked, as if my money didn’t count the same. It was the worst Valentine’s experience I’ve had.
