A quiet, lovely setting, though it could use a bit more character. The rooms are well above standard, especially the big bathrooms with heated floors and towel rails, and it had all the amenities you'd expect. Staff were polite and service was adequate. It’s about an hour from Johannesburg, so the location works well. I’d suggest Mount Grace next door if you’re paying yourself. If it’s someone else’s money, though, why not? Seems best suited to a mature couple looking for some peace.

The Christmas 2025 lunch at De Hoek had a lovely spread, and I really enjoyed the food and surroundings. Our waiter was the weak point. He seemed very inexperienced, got overly familiar, and didn’t seem to remember he was working at a 5* establishment. The wait staff need proper training.

We returned for our 10 year anniversary after an incredible visit in 2016, and it was such a letdown. The food was average where it used to feel Michelin star standard, and we had to keep tracking someone down just to get a drink. Nothing about it felt special, and I’d put the place at 3* at best now. We later learned it had been sold in 2018, and under new ownership and management this beautiful hotel has gone downhill. The prices are still the same, but the service, food, and quality have dropped badly. Such a shame after the unbelievable attentiveness we got on our first visit. I wouldn’t spend the money for an experience that disappointing.

Really beautiful place, with gorgeous rooms and heated floors. The food was amazing, and the staff were friendly and helpful. A very good experience.

It felt quite empty, and that took away from the atmosphere. The food looked well presented but just didn't have something for me, like it hadn't been cooked with love. Waiters were efficient, but it felt like a job to them, with no personal touch. I’m comparing it with an event here 10 years ago. A bit disappointing, such a pity.
