We’ve stayed at Rheola's Guest Cottage before while travelling north or south on the N3 past Harrismith. This time, though, there was no backup power or lighting apart from the kitchen, whereas each room used to have a battery light. We arrived in the dark, and Bill helped as much as he could. The pillows smelled as if someone else had slept on them. The potholes on the way to the guesthouse have also got much worse over the last few years. That isn’t the cottage’s fault or in its control, but it’s something to keep in mind, especially if you may arrive after dark. There was no WiFi, and Vodacom internet was struggling too, possibly because the whole town had a power outage.

Harrismith is a small, quiet town, so Rheola’s is better suited to a stopover than to looking for adventure. The cottage has a charming old-style feel, and Rheola was lovely. We appreciated her hospitality on our way to KZN.

The area felt quiet, private and safe, and I really liked the decor. The rooms were nice and clean, the host was very friendly, and I was very happy with my stay.

There’s a lovely view outside and a big space where kids can run around. The cottage is beautiful and child friendly, and the host is genuinely welcoming and friendly.

Thanks for getting up and going out of your way to fit us in. The place was easy to find and clean, with more than enough extra-warm blankets to thaw out the cold.
