Makalali River Lodge

The days were easy to enjoy: we spent time by the pool and had fresh, high quality meals with great service. We also went on two game drives each day with Paul and his partner in crime, and saw the Big 5 plus plenty more. The team made the place feel like family from the start. We stayed two nights and had an amazing time. For anyone driving themselves, our small Renault made it to reception, though it was an adventure. Enter the reserve from the R36 at the main gate, then take the wide sandy road to the Makalali reserve gate. Show your booking confirmation and passport at both gates. From there, follow the signs along a small, bumpy road through the reserve to the parking lot beside the abandoned reception. Call reception and they’ll collect you in a proper safari vehicle and take you to the hotel. I’d suggest calling reception on arrival day to arrange a pickup at the Makalali reserve gate, and maybe enjoy a mini safari on the way. Once you’re at the hotel, there’s nothing to worry about, just enjoy it. Thanks to the team for a once in a lifetime experience!

The room had a lovely view, and both it and the shower were really spacious. Being right in the bush made the lodge peaceful, and the staff’s warm hospitality and attention to detail have made both of my stays memorable. I always look forward to the BOMA, and I’d happily come back again. One thing that took away from dinner was the number of flies in the dining area. They were buzzing around and sometimes landing near the food.

Rodney and Ingrid were wonderful guides, friendly and full of knowledge. Their enthusiasm for their work and the way they communicated really stood out, and every safari with them was memorable. The staff throughout Makalali were warm and attentive, which made the stay feel special. The lodge itself is stunning, with beautiful, spotless accommodation and a great outdoor shower. Meals were superb, and the daily rhythm was just right: coffee before the morning drives, cocktails before the sunset drives. We couldn’t have asked for a better visit. A definite 10/10!
