The place had apparently burned down, but I only heard that from a third party in mid-September 2024. They said rooms were still operating, and Bushpub Inn never contacted me with any information. I had a one-night booking for the following November, which I cancelled at the end of September, before the 30-day cutoff in the policy. I asked for a refund, sent two emails, and heard nothing. When I stopped by recently, I found the place closed. I understand how awful it is to have your business burn down, but some communication would have helped. Customer care was close to zero, so I wouldn't choose it if it ever reopens.

A good meal and a drink make this a nice place to stop before heading into the Timbavati or Klaserie reserves. We tried a range of dishes and everything tasted great. It's a rustic bar and restaurant where locals come to meet up and socialize. Service can be slow, but things move more slowly out in the bush, which gives you time to enjoy it.

Casper made us feel like family from the moment we walked into the Bush Pub. His smile and warm welcome had us settled in right away, and somehow I ended up telling him things I'd never even said out loud to myself. He feels like family. I might name my first son Casper just to repay him for being such a good friend. We'd been searching all over Hoedspruit for truly great chicken livers. Everywhere was good, but these were the best we've had in South Africa. Casper brought them out himself and even showed us the happy chickens, which he hand-feeds and massages every day in their spa-like home. The drinks were just as thoughtfully done. He pours a perfect pint, and has apparently been working out the science of it, with plans to publish his research later this year. We finished lunch with a cheeky afternoon Jameson, inspired by the lovely, sustainable walls made from bottles of the dark delicatessen. Casper brought our chilled treat in lightning time. We left with full stomachs and even fuller hearts. The Bush Pub and Casper showed up in our lives when hope felt far away. Thanks for changing our lives and hearts. We'll be back as soon as we can.

The venue is lovely, and you can't beat the bush setting, but I wish we'd gone for pizza. The oxtail was good. My espetada, which was on special on the board as you enter, was cold and tough, and the bangers and mash had sausages with big pieces of fat. The Don Pedro's was the worst I've ever had, and expensive too. When the Manager came over to ask about the food, I told him about the espetada. He agreed with me and went on about how bad the food is.
