African Ubuntu Backpackers

I felt safe and comfortable at Ubuntu, and it’s simply a great place to be. It’s colourful and full of kind, funny people, with a relaxed vibe and plenty of comfortable corners to hang out alone or meet people with similar interests. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean, and there are lots of little details to discover. The whole place shares a love of the ocean. Taking a surf lesson can make your time in the water feel much more comfortable and fun. The location is hard to beat: the beach is right in front of the house, the good surf spots are close, and everyday convenience stores are less than five minutes away on foot. Flamingo Café is great for coffee and breakfast. Choosing Ubuntu was one of the best decisions I’ve made so far.

The dorm had a lovely distant view of the shoreline, and you could watch the waves to see how they were for surfing. The kitchen was well stocked, the African art and decor were great, and the people were friendly and happy to point you toward good deals. Everyone shared the free braai/BBQ fire, and there was safe, free street parking. I drank the tap water with no ill effects, and there was plenty to explore in town. My bunk shook and creaked whenever the person above moved. One of the dogs took an instant dislike to me.

The hostel had a great atmosphere, thanks to both the staff and the other guests, and I had a memorable time. It's in a generally safe, family-friendly area, with the beach an easy walk away. Surfer's village is about a 30-minute walk, which is manageable if you enjoy walking; otherwise you'll need an Uber or taxi, and that can be hit or miss. My only downsides were some questionable cleanliness and the lack of a secure place to lock things away. I honestly loved everything else about the place.

I wasn't staying there, but all the cafes were closed and I needed somewhere to work on my thesis. Everyone kindly let me use the place. It was a really nice, relaxed setting. I'd definitely stay there if I came back to J-Bay.
