Once in Joburg

We slept well, and the staff were genuinely helpful. It’s a good spot for people in their twenties to socialize, though it can be peaceful too. I liked being able to use the shared kitchen to make our own food. Our bed, bathroom, and floor were clean and quiet. The walls and carpet could use more attention, though. I’d skip carpets altogether.

I had a nice stay, and the staff were really friendly. The rooms are small but comfortable, with their own bathrooms, and the kitchen is compact but has plenty of equipment. I met some cool people, too. I’d told Once a few days before we left that my friend and I wanted to share a room. They said they’d sort it out, but when we arrived, things got a bit chaotic because my friend’s room was fully booked.

Meeting people here is easy, and the place has a relaxed, urban feel. The reception and lounge decor reminded me of a bookstore café, with a merchandise shop too. South African history comes through in the pictures along the hallways. Our room was very clean and the beds were comfortable. There’s a smart-looking restaurant and bar on site, plus a coffee shop next door. Check-in was quick and easy, the staff were welcoming and helpful, and checkout was just as simple.

The neighborhood has a lively nightlife, a good Saturday market, and Wits university is close by. It feels especially suited to younger or more adventurous visitors, though the area can get noisy at night, at least on weekends. They provide good-quality earplugs. The front desk team at Once in Joburg were wonderful. I kept going back with questions and requests about laundry, tours, and other things, even though we were only there for one night. Our room and bathroom were great, and it was one of the most comfortable budget-friendly places we stayed in the country during winter. Breakfast was basic, but free and filling.
