Kathu Gamagara Lodge

I’m so grateful to the receptionist. I was there for work when my bag got lost at the airport, and while I waited for it to arrive, she went out of her way to make sure I had what I needed to get things done.

The room had a damp, dirty-mat kind of smell, and the mats were filthy. There was also a bad odor in the toilet, especially when flushing, and the refrigerator had no water. Around 9, the cleaner opened our room door without knocking. When we asked what was going on, she gave us attitude. The place was horrible.

Breakfast was a big highlight, with cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit salad, filter coffee, tea, and a filling cooked meal of sausage, sweetcorn fritters, pap, eggs, bacon, mushrooms, toast, and jams. It exceeded what we expected. Gamagara Guest House is also a great stop if you’re halfway back to Johannesburg. Vicky welcomed us warmly, and even though we booked at the last minute, the room was ready and had lovely quality linen for a comfortable night. The pool area is beautiful and peaceful, and the bathroom feels luxurious, with both a shower and a bath. For the service and amenities, the price is very reasonable. A great choice in the area or while passing through.

We were well looked after on a quiet Saturday night, with a good dinner and a hearty breakfast framing our one-night stay. Gamagara Lodge made a welcome stop on our memorable drive from Pretoria to Cape Town through our biggest province, with its small but warm population. It’s a lovely oasis within Kathu’s wider oasis. I’ll try the golf next time.
