Mercure Johannesburg Midrand Hotel

The whole team was kind and professional, and every interaction felt welcoming. I appreciated the thoughtful touches and the care they put into making guests comfortable. Their attention made my recent stay memorable, and I’m sincerely grateful for the service.

The kitchen staff were friendly and professional, and even brought juice to my table. They were a pleasure, but paying guests should be able to count on good service from reception too. On Monday the 24th, I checked in for the event and was assigned room 102. The receptionist looked tired and failed to return my ID card. He didn’t seem concerned about making sure I got it back. The room had no Wi-Fi, so I went back to reception for my ID, but then the access card wouldn’t open the room. The receptionist had a bad attitude, gave me no Wi-Fi details, and didn’t apologize for the trouble with my ID. I had a speaking engagement at the Gallagher center on Tuesday 25th and extended my stay. A different receptionist, who was much more pleasant, checked me into room 123. It was clean, though there was no body wash on the shower stand.

We stayed three nights for business. The hotel felt safe and fenced off, parking was secure, the Wi-Fi was good, and the room had a fan or air conditioning, an opening window, and a pleasant smell. Towels were clean, and breakfast was good, though it cost extra and could have had more variety. The bed was made when we came back, but my dirty socks were still under the covers, so the bedding clearly hadn't been removed to check it properly. The biggest issue was the noise. Drunk guests were extremely loud in the early hours, and although I first thought the reviews mentioning it described a one-off, it seems to happen regularly. The elevator still wasn't working, the breakfast coffee machine made terrible coffee, and the extractor fan in the room didn't work. The rooms are on the small side, so one person per room is probably best. TV channel choices were limited, and the toilet seat was slightly broken. Staff and security could be friendlier. Even a good morning at breakfast, or a welcome to the Mercure, would help. We were four people, but nobody tried to put us on the same floor or near one another. One other thing I'm unsure how to judge: the room door doesn't close automatically behind you. That's handy with lots of luggage, since you don't have to hold a heavy door open, but for safety it would be better if it shut by itself.

We had a really relaxing stay. The restaurant food was delicious, and our room was comfortable and clean. The staff were welcoming and attentive, so I'd definitely come back.
