White Lion Lodge

The people we met, the rooms and the house all made this place feel beautiful and impressive. We had a wonderful time, whether we were on safari or sharing a meal around the big table. It felt like our stay could go on forever, and saying goodbye was hard. Hopefully we'll come back one day. Thanks to Gerry, the owner, for making the place special. Christiaan and Marianne

Romeo made the wildlife introductions engaging and full of useful detail, and Gerry and her team were attentive throughout. Meals were excellent, with a warm, personal feel even when shared with the other guests. The lodge, bungalows and Karoo garden are thoughtfully put together, comfortable and full of little details. We spent three lovely days in the southern part of the Sanbona Reserve, which felt wonderfully peaceful. Trips to the north, where larger animals can also be seen, are available for an additional conservation fee.

The drive in is worth planning for. The dirt track is rough and rocky, with two Ford's to get through, and heavy, persistent rain could make it impassable. If you're arriving in a hire car, get something like a Toyota Cross with more ground clearance, or expect to pay a lot more for a 4x4. Around the Lodge there are steep slopes and steps, and getting into the open safari vehicle means climbing aboard, so that could be tricky for older guests or anyone with limited mobility. We came as couples and it was our first reserve visit. The suites were excellent, very spacious, and had large private terraces with sun loungers. Dinner and breakfast were served at one big table with all the guests. The food was nicely presented with two mains to choose from, and the red wine at dinner was superb. Our guide and driver was friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our two nights and will remember seeing the Lion at close quarters.

We loved being based in the south. The morning drives gave us so many chances to spot wildlife, and I thought the terrain was more beautiful too, so it felt like we got the best of both worlds. Romeo, our driver and guide, brought such passion and respect to talking about the animals, the wider wildlife and the surroundings. His knowledge was incredible. The staff, food and rooms were all amazing, and the safari itself was unforgettable. We were really sad to leave White Lion Lodge and can't wait to return.
