We saw the Big 5 in just two drives, including a close encounter with a cheetah and lions on kills. After 40 years of safaris, I also had my first ever leopard sighting. Elvis and his tracker were very good, and the game drives were great. Umlani is a small, rustic camp with 8 rooms and a lovely view over a river bed. Our Rondavel chalet was comfortable and had an outdoor shower. Meals were excellent and served communally, which made it easy to meet and chat with other guests. We also enjoyed spending time talking with the owners and hosts over dinner. The tree house was so peaceful that we spent a couple of hours there, and I really recommend it. Thanks to the excellent, friendly team at Umlani for a memorable stay.

Lunch at camp came with elephants and giraffes close by, and we even watched lions guarding a buffalo carcass get stampeded away by a herd of elephants while we sat on the lunch deck. The camp’s own wildlife viewing was outstanding. On the drives, ranger Elvis and tracker Martin were knowledgeable and great fun. We saw the whole Big Five on almost every drive, along with many other incredible sights. Umlani felt like a real bush experience, with animals right there, but it was also very comfortable and we felt exceptionally well looked after. The staff were super accommodating about fitting in the treehouse visit when it was very windy at night. The treehouse itself was lovely. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. Umlani was absolutely magical, the highlight of our South Africa trip and a perfect honeymoon adventure. We could have stayed forever and really hope to return one day.

What made my stay special was how kind, genuine, and welcoming everyone at Umlani was. I had a wonderful time at Umlani Bushcamp, surrounded by a strong connection to nature. The lodge is simple and thoughtfully set up, with everything we needed, and I really appreciated its eco-friendly approach. Our game drives were incredible. Ephraim and Martin were attentive, very knowledgeable guides, and their organized approach showed real respect for the wildlife.

The treehouse afternoon was unforgettable. Elephants came so close that we could smell them and hear them breathing. We were lucky to see a two-week-old elephant calf with the herd, a rare and intimate moment we’ll always remember. Afternoon tea with kudu wandering nearby was another special touch. If I could give Umlani Bushcamp 10 stars, I would, and we’ll definitely return. Umlani is a family-run camp among the trees, with only about 15 guests in a small number of authentic rondavels. It feels genuinely wild and connected to South Africa’s bush, while still offering simple comfort and deep relaxation. The facilities are rustic rather than lavish, which is exactly what makes the place so appealing to me. Bathrooms are outdoors, so you can shower and take care of business under the stars, with the layout designed to give complete privacy. The staff are warm and attentive without hovering, and it’s easy to feel relaxed and unrushed. The food was consistently delicious and well prepared. Each evening, dinner was charmingly announced with a drumbeat. Twice-daily game drives were professionally run, and we never felt crowded. The guides and drivers were knowledgeable and observant. We were fortunate to see the Big Five, African wild dogs, and plenty more.

The wildlife density in the Timbavati reserve really impressed me. We were clearly lucky to encounter so many rare animals and scenes, and I’m sure the area and our ranger and tracker had something to do with it too. I also appreciated their effort to keep sightings to no more than two vehicles at a time so the animals wouldn’t be overwhelmed. I visited Umlani with eight friends from 1-4 November, and it was an outstanding experience we’ll never forget. Michaela and the whole team were incredibly welcoming and generous. Umlani is a beautiful, peaceful bushcamp, with lovely rooms, consistently excellent food, and great service in every way. I couldn’t recommend it enough to anyone considering a visit. Thank you!
