There were 12 of us, and Amberg Country Estate worked so well for the group. Each of us could have our own cottage, with plenty of room to come together in the spacious ones. The staff were lovely, helpful, and efficient. It feels wonderfully remote, though the town is close enough for an urgent supermarket run. We couldn't have asked for a better stay.

The views over Paarl and across the Swartland were lovely, and the service was just as good, friendly and accommodating. At Farm Boy Cuisine at Amberg Country Estate on the Du Toitskloof Pass, they put together a platter of fresh, delicious meat, cheese, salads, and bread. Definitely make the effort to visit.

The accommodation itself was really great, and we enjoyed our stay. But a heads-up for families: all three cottages we booked had nude artwork on the walls. It was an unpleasant surprise for us and the other two couples with us, and could lead to awkward conversations with kids. I know it won't bother everyone, but I'd check before booking. There's a picture for reference.

We had no electricity for the night, though we made the best of our stay in the beautiful Garden Cottage, which the owner moved us to after we found that our booked Mountain Cottage didn't have the promised braai facilities. I also wish the owner had been warmer and more welcoming. The location is lovely, but finding the property on Google Maps is nearly impossible, so ask for a pin to the on-site restaurant. Good stay overall.

Helga, the owner, made us feel so welcome. She was friendly and accommodating, and there were fresh flowers in every room when we arrived. Our group of 10 was there for my wedding weekend, and we loved the beautifully furnished cottages, the scenery, the location, the restaurant, and the wonderful service. Amberg Country Estate is a hidden gem, and we'll be back soon.
