Evenings around the campfire and horseback rides through the mountains were such highlights. I loved my time at Thandile Lodge, where the fresh, homemade meals were a delight every day. Cobus and Maggie are warm-hearted hosts who love sharing the beauty of South Africa. The giraffes, dogs, and horses made the whole stay feel magical, and there was plenty to enjoy. I wholeheartedly recommend Thandile Lodge!

We were moved from the cottages to Thandile Country Lodge, and found the lodge much more comfortable. Room 6 was lovely and clean, and gave us a chance to relax in the peaceful surroundings. The scenery is beautiful, the animals are a delight, and the dogs made the place feel homely. Magdel and Cobus were friendly, welcoming, and accommodating, and we appreciated how willing they were to make us comfortable. The lodge has plenty of charm and potential. With more consistent cleaning in shared spaces, it could be a truly special retreat. Thank you for a memorable stay.

There was no rush, noise, staged zoo feeling, or performance here. It was real bush, real animals, and people who know and respect the land. Giraffes moved calmly among horses, antelope appeared from the grass, and elephants fed without fuss. Everything happened on its own terms. You’re a guest, not the centre of attention, and that felt right. We had time to watch and listen without anyone barking facts at us. The bush lunch by the fire was simple and grounding, with food shared, the fire tended, and stories exchanged. It felt old fashioned in the best way, like people gathering outdoors have done for thousands of years. What stayed with me was the trust. The animals seemed relaxed, and the people were calm, capable, and respectful. There was quiet confidence and deep knowledge, without hype or fake luxury. If you’re after ticking boxes and selfies, this probably isn’t for you. But if you want to feel the land, see the animals as animals rather than attractions, and leave subtly changed in a lasting way, it’s something special. I’d do it again without hesitation.

There was loads to keep our kids busy, including horse rides, fishing, and hikes. Getting close to the friendly giraffes was unforgettable, and sweet Mollie the dog quickly won us over. We stayed in the self-catering kothuise, which suited us perfectly. Kobus and Magdel welcomed us so warmly from the moment we arrived and went above and beyond to make us feel at home. If you want to get away from the city and reconnect with nature, I can’t recommend Thandile Lodge enough. We’ll definitely be back.

We spent four nights here to relax on a farm and get away from the city. Magdel and Cobus, thank you for the lovely stay. The traditional Afrikaans meals were good, just right for switching off, and the kids enjoyed their horse rides. My wife also received a birthday hamper. Molly was fantastic with me and the kids. I wish he could live forever so other families could enjoy him too.
