The next morning there was no apology, and the owner was still upset. I was left without some of my luggage and basic toiletries after a hostile check-in that could have been avoided if I’d been told the agreed time was no longer convenient. I could have made other arrangements with enough notice. I’d arranged in writing with Chris, the owner, to check in at 11:00 PM because of my travel plans. I arrived at 10:45 PM and got no answer from the intercom. When I reached her by phone, she berated me for waking her, despite the agreement, then shouted and used the f-word several times. After letting me into the main house, she locked the entrance and went to her room without giving me a gate remote or letting me bring my bags in from the car. I tried another door to get my luggage and set off the alarm, so I spent the night with only some of my things and no basic toiletries to avoid another confrontation. It also seemed the room hadn't been set aside for a normal check-in, and the kitchen entrance to the main house wasn't open as usual. It felt like the conflict had been set up to make a point. If basic respect and reliability matter to you, stay somewhere else. Here’s the email exchange: Hi Chris, Hope you are well. I'm looking for an overnight stay for tomorrow night (Friday). I can check in only at 11 pm. I'm not sure if that's okay. Please let me know. Hi Gary No worries, see you tomorrow at 11!

The location is a little out of the way if you don't have a vehicle, but the staff are friendly and helpful. The backpacker has ensuite cottages, a kitchen, a pool, a bar, and long term vehicle storage. The kitchen is clean, well equipped, and kept up. Rooms are clean with plenty of bedding, though they get chilly in winter.

I was really pleased with my stay at Twana Backpackers Lodge. The room was tidy and the bathroom clean. On some evenings, a few of us sat around the bar counter and had great conversations about all sorts of things.

Chris and Arnie made us feel at home during our wonderful stay at Twana lodge. They're great hosts and top people. I'd recommend them for tours around SA, including their famous Africa - Europe Road Tours.

A lovely place near Pretoria, close enough to get around but away from the hustle and bustle. Arne & Chris made us feel like part of the family while we stayed with them.
