Villa Schreiner Guest House

The pool was kept in good shape, and my LO loved cooling off in it in the Joburg weather. The Chetty family, who own the Villa, were lovely, and the staff were all very friendly. Pastor Sherwin is chatty, and he and Throsh were both welcoming. We stayed for 8 days. A lot of the room and property details online didn't match what we found. There was no kettle in the room, so getting a hot drink meant going along the small path to the main eating area. That was especially inconvenient during storms. The owner said the kettles had been removed because the Solar Panel power installation meant they used too much electricity. The room was dark, with poor lighting, and the carpet was very old, rather dirty, and damp underfoot. The bedding was old and a little threadbare. The bathroom was large, with both a bath and shower, which was handy for my LO. But tiles around the bath were broken, some hooks had come off, and each guest got just one small old towel. I asked for a darker towel for my hair and they brought one. After my family was electrocuted on the second day, the towel rail was eventually taken out of service completely. The BBQ setup wasn't what I'd expect at an SA property. There was a wheely webber bbq, but we weren't sure how to prepare the meat or what crockery and cutlery were available. I assumed we'd need to arrange to use the owners' kitchen, but we didn't know what to do and didn't want to bother them again. The outdoor furniture was old too. The couch under the little grass-lapa was so sunken I felt like a turtle stuck on its back trying to get out. Several sun loungers were damaged and unusable when they were put out. We didn't have breakfast. You can choose breakfast, but you have to WhatsApp the night before. When I went to make a morning cuppa, I didn't see cereal, toast, or fruit. For us, it felt like a true European 3 star experience, not what I'd expect from a South African b&b. It might suit a whistle stop, but despite the lovely family and staff, we left feeling a bit let down.
