I came home exhausted and disheartened. The flatlet badly needed a deep clean: there were mould stains on the curtains, black mould on the wall behind the bed, and dust caked on the fan. The towels were very threadbare. We had been warned that the jacuzzi water came from a “natural source” and wouldn't be clear, but pond slime was swirling around us and clinging to our bodies, which made it hard to enjoy. A dog barked incessantly, and people seemed to be arguing in the neighbouring house through the night. I know that part was beyond the hosts' control, but it added to the frustration. I don't expect much for a one-night stay, but at least I expect a clean place.

I canceled our booking for personal reasons, and the owner sent me this. I paid R2600, but R2200 was taken even though we never stayed there. I've always used bookings.com, and this has never happened to me before. When I previously messaged the property, they said they couldn't switch on the jacuzzi ahead of time because it used “too much electricity,” even though I had told them when we would arrive. Why take payment for a holiday home if they don't want to heat the jacuzzi before guests arrive? A terrible experience.

The hot water wasn't warm enough for a nice shower on a cold morning, and the TV didn't work very well. There were also dogs barking, which made it hard to sleep. Several things shown on the list weren't supplied: towels, toilet paper, dishcloths, and braai wood.
