Dunton Guest House

Gigi and Iris are such lovely hosts, and we really enjoy staying here. The guest house is always our first choice when we visit Johannesburg. It’s in a very convenient spot, and the rooms are beautifully furnished with care in the details. This place really stands out on its own.

I was there for two months, and the meals could use more options for people staying long term. The food itself was nice. Gigi was welcoming and easy to talk with, and he seemed excited when he found out we were both Christians. I had a harder time with Iris, who felt very unapproachable. She and the agency had agreed to provide me free food, but that ended up meaning two slices of brown bread with mayonnaise and cheese, with no drinks. I wasn’t happy about it and had to get my company admin involved to sort it out. Breakfast hours were also changed without warning, and I nearly missed breakfast.

I’ve stayed at Dunton Guest House for well over a year, and Iris and Gigi have always paid attention to the details and made people feel at home. I’ve met several guests who described Dunton as a real break from everyday stress. The whole staff is warm and welcoming, and the breakfasts are amazing. Some very good friends of mine from Switzerland stayed here too. With its location near Sandton and the city sights, I’d recommend it to anyone looking for accommodation in Johannesburg. Iris and Gigi, you rock!

We were asked for our identity documents on arrival, and copies were made without asking us to sign an indemnity form related to POPI. The copies weren’t returned when we left, which concerned us about how our personal information was being handled. This should be addressed to ensure compliance with data privacy rules and improve the guest experience. My partner and I had a pleasant long weekend at Dunton Guesthouse overall, though some interactions with management, especially Iris, left us uneasy. She wasn’t as welcoming as we’d hoped when we arrived, while her husband Gigi was friendly and ready to help throughout our stay. On our third day, Iris went straight to her apartment without acknowledging us when we entered. When we left, she seemed suspicious about the barbecue we had, which was uncomfortable. As an attorney, I found the experience disheartening. Dunton is pleasant accommodation, but the professionalism of the managing staff, particularly Iris, could improve. Experiences like ours could put others off staying here.
