Illovo Central 1023

The rooms are nice, but the pool was the main reason we came and paid to stay there. We had to pass through the cafe to reach it, and it was closed the entire weekend, from the 31st December to the 02nd January. We were stuck in the room for two whole days, which was honestly very disappointing. You can do better.

The corridors constantly smelled of weed, and there was no sense of hospitality. I had to switch rooms because the first one was filthy and reeked of fresh cigarette smoke. The apartment I was moved to looked clean at first, but it was just as dirty: behind the bed base, an old red substance, possibly blood, seemed to have sunk into the floor. A blanket in the closet smelled sweaty, like it hadn't been washed in a while. As a woman travelling alone, I wouldn't feel safe checking in here. Avoid it. Never again.

I was incredibly disappointed. The booking wasn't for the room I expected: I'd specifically paid to upgrade for a view, a balcony with an outdoor table, and a bath. Before booking, I asked about the cafe and pool, but nobody told me they'd be closed. I won't stay here again or recommend it.

That chicken burger at the Illovo Central Cafe on the 8th floor was the best I've ever had. I tried the Mandela Day special on Monday, 18 July, and it was easily the best chicken burger in town. The cafe keeps getting better, turning out meals you'll want to write about. Thanks to Dimi and the Illovo Central Cafe team for the amazing food and the great service, as always. You guys rock.
