Sand River Guest House

The chef was so considerate on his own initiative, and the food was wonderful. Every staff member did their best to meet our needs, and the service was amazing, nothing felt like too much to ask. The peaceful setting made it easy to forget we were in Johannesburg. Relax by the river or the pool. If you're staying in a Johannesburg guest house, stay here.

We felt safe in the area, and the garden was beautiful and quiet. The service was friendly and helpful, and the rooms, though a bit small, were clean and tidy. It was very quiet and a nice place to relax. The aircon drainage pump made so much noise that we couldn't sleep with the aircon on. It would be better to route regular drain pipes outside.

We were a wedding party, so perhaps things got a bit overwhelming and service was slow. We were told there'd be a bar, but when we arrived they were out of Castle Light, and closing out the bill took quite a while. The staff were still very helpful and friendly, and made us feel at home.

I booked this guest house mainly because of the river, but when I visited in May the property was locked down. There was almost no access to the amenities or nearby areas, and we were left with very little to do. The stay didn’t match what the listing had led me to expect, so I felt misled and extremely disappointed. I found the lack of transparency unprofessional and unacceptable. I can’t recommend it unless management is more honest about what guests will actually find.
