Shamwari covers a vast 67,000 acres, with green fields framed by rolling hills. Animals can blend right into the landscape, then suddenly appear in groups: zebras, a dozen giraffes, pairs of rhinos or elephants. The Big Five are all here. We stayed our first night at Eagle Crag in a suite among the forest, then spent the next two nights at Sindile in a beautiful tented suite overlooking a broad view and a watering hole where elephants came by. Both accommodations had five-star design and a strong sense of place. Shamwari's rangers were excellent and knew a lot about biology and ecology. At Eagle Crag, Leon found us some great sightings while explaining the survival food chain. We spent two days with Shaun at Sindile. He went out of his way to give us great encounters and was an astounding driver, taking us to the richest groups of animals and stopping at the best angle for photos. His university studies in microbiology and zoology added to what we learned. The whole staff were welcoming and attentive to details. The food was excellent, creatively presented, and gourmet quality. My husband and I had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend Shamwari as a top African safari destination.

Our ranger Frans was outstanding. He knew so much and had an uncanny ability to spot and track animals, so every drive came with unbelievable wow moments and fantastic chances for photos that captured lifelong memories. We spent three nights at Eagles Crag, and it was better than we could have imagined. The service was five-star, the accommodation luxurious, the fresh food delicious, and nature right on the doorstep. The Eagle Crag staff were second to none and went above and beyond to make the stay perfect. Bman looked after us so well. He seemed to know exactly what I liked, almost as if he could read my mind, but really it was his amazing attention to detail and how quickly he figured out each guest's preferences. The chefs were amazing, and you’ll never go hungry. We’re pretty sure we rolled out of there! Every meal was a journey, and I was very impressed that they could accommodate my garlic allergy at every meal. The room was a spacious cottage with everything we could ask for, including a plunge pool, a fully stocked bar fridge, snacks close at hand, and inviting, comfortable furnishings. If you’re after a bucket-list safari, Eagle Crag and Shamwari are unforgettable.

The safaris were incredible, and seeing the animals so close is something I’ll never forget. Our rangers were passionate and knowledgeable, which made it even better. The food was unreal, the rooms were stunning, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. From arrival to departure, everything felt next level. One of the most incredible places I’ve ever stayed, and a trip I’ll always remember.

Jonty knew the land and wildlife so well that he could predict where animals would move and put us in exactly the right place for some very special moments. He never tired of our questions and seemed to have an answer for everything. With no more than six people per drive, we all had a chance to ask. It took us a week to process it all, and we hope to return someday. Siya and our ranger Jonty couldn’t have been better. The 27,000 hectares of bush held an incredible variety of wildlife. Siya seemed to read our minds within hours and had our preferred drinks waiting without being asked. The food, accommodation, and service were the best we’ve ever experienced. There were so many things to do between drives that our only problem was not having enough hours to try them all. These are memories we’ll take to the grave. If you’re looking for a very special safari, look no further.

We can’t fault our stay at the Bayethe lodge. Every staff member was wonderful, and we hope to be back soon. Our guide Sihle from Bayethe made our December 2025 trip so memorable. He had a quiet confidence and an amazing feel for where the animals were. When other vehicles moved on, he stayed and asked us to trust him. Thanks to him we had some magnificent sightings. He also had a great sense of humor and a lovely smile. We still talk about him over dinner.
