Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel

My dad and I visited Coopmanhuijs on 24 December and left feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. At first, staff seemed hesitant to serve us, saying the chef was busy preparing for Christmas Eve. They said they could serve us, but the hesitation was obvious, and my dad even asked whether they were sure. After we sat down and ordered drinks, the waiter asked us to order only a salad because the chef “didn’t want to cook.” I ordered a salad so we wouldn't be a burden, and my dad decided not to order food. Around 10 minutes later, a white family of four arrived. Soon after, the waiter brought my dad the menu again and said he could order whatever he wanted. That inconsistency upset us and made the treatment feel discriminatory. We asked for the bill and decided to leave. I was going to pay for the drinks, and they needed to cancel the salad, but we were told the drinks were on the house. I appreciate the gesture, but it doesn't undo how uncomfortable we felt. In 2025, no customer should be made to feel treated differently or unwelcome. This wasn't what we expected, and as a person of colour I wouldn't recommend the place. We shouldn't still be dealing with this in 2025.

On Christmas Eve, my sister, father, and I were told the restaurant was preparing and could only offer a few things, like salad. Soon after, a white family of four arrived and received full service. Being treated so differently is unacceptable and leaves serious concerns about racism.

William and Jackson made sure we were settled in and worked around our room preferences, including a window near the pool, and an issue with our door. The hotel has a lovely historic feel, and all the rooms are lovely. Service was quick and right on point, from laundry and food to recommendations and transfers. I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Breakfast had a tasty range of choices, and the hotel sits right in the heart of Stellenbosch, with everything just steps away. Valet parking was handy for arriving by car. Our room was spacious and had everything we needed. The spa visit for a manicure, pedicure, and massage was a real pleasure, with a warm, professional staff member. The receptionist was incredibly welcoming and even let us check in early in the morning, which helped a lot since my husband had a biking trip planned that day.
