The lack of on site management left us with numerous problems and no one there to address or fix them. Room 6, the Equinox, felt totally user unfriendly. One wall is glass facing the first floor veranda, where hotel guests sit, so there’s little privacy. There’s no door or wall between the bedroom and bathroom, meaning you have to close another curtain, and there’s no shower door or hidden toilet. The bathroom has glassware and tile floors, which became wet and slippery without a shower curtain. The shower had no soap holder, soap, or safety bar, which felt dangerous. Breakfast was the worst we’ve had anywhere: there were no choices, just sliced fruit passed on to the next table if you didn’t want it, and scrambled eggs with bacon. The so called bacon was so tough and hard it was barely cuttable or chewable. After dinner, we came back in the dark and couldn’t open the front door. We called the manager, Gil, then waited outside in gale force winds for 10 minutes. He checked whether our bedroom door could unlock, but it couldn’t, so he had to let us in. On our last morning there was no power, and we had to stumble around in the dark while keeping the curtain partly closed. Food we’d put in the freezer the night before had melted. Breakfast had no hot food or toast, and there were no apologies or vouchers for a hot meal. We’re seasoned travelers, retired airline staff and crew, and have stayed in hotels around Africa and the world. It was a totally bad experience.
