The noise was dreadful. One guest spoke loudly on the phone, and I could hear the person on the other end too. I tried to shush them; they paused briefly, then carried on. Later, even the sounds of her showering seemed to reverberate into my room. I wonder whether the walls meet building standards. I also requested my breakfast package for an early departure through the WhatsApp number I was given, but never got a reply. Everything else had seemed up to standard until then. This was the worst place I’ve experienced in all my travels. I’ll never recommend it or stay here again.

The setting is a big part of the charm, with stunning mountain views and the loveliest street in town starting right behind the hotel, lined with cafés and shops and full of character. Everything was clean and neat, and the service was excellent. It’s a wonderful hotel, and I’ll definitely return.

We’ve stopped in for breakfast twice in three weeks while driving through Swellendam, though we haven’t stayed here. The food is very good and nicely presented, and the staff are friendly and helpful.
