Tulbagh Mountain Manor

The views are breathtaking, and the whole area is amazing. Service was great and the in-house breakfasts decent. There's plenty to do if you enjoy artisan food, wine tasting and the cultural feel of a great little town.

We spent three nights at Tulbagh Mountain Manor and loved how quiet and beautiful the mountain setting was. Surrounded by greenery and peaks, it was easy to leave the rush of everyday life behind. Breakfast each morning was a highlight, freshly made and served with warmth. The team also took care of every detail and went out of their way to make us comfortable. Tulbagh Mountain Manor feels like a peaceful place where nature and hospitality meet. We can't wait to return, and highly recommend it to anyone looking to rest and reconnect with nature.

We came for our honeymoon, and the owner was so friendly and accommodating. The view across the Tulbagh valley and mountains is stunning. And the breakfast, I wish I could give them another star for it.

A disappointing stay in a place with gorgeous views and so much potential. I'd avoid it. We booked the separate Honeymoon suite, partly on stilts, for its lovely views and air conditioning. On arrival, the friendly staff member showed us the room and mentioned the owner would be away for our whole stay. When I asked how to use the aircon, she said she didn't know why it wasn't working. It was 32'c in the shade, unbearably hot for two Brit's not used to that heat, and we'd booked specifically to have A/C. I said we couldn't sleep without it; she shrugged and said she'd try to reach the owner. Later my wife asked whether there was another room with working A/C. There was, so we moved, but it was inferior to what we had booked. We hadn't realized it had no curtains over the glass-panelled double doors, leaving no privacy when anyone, including the gardener, walked past. Sunrise also flooded the room with light. It looked as though blinds or curtains had once been there, but had broken and not been replaced. There were three dogs on site, which we love, but they were left out all night. At 4am a small one scratched frantically at our door and woke me. I told the staff member at breakfast, and she just said she didn't know why the dog did that. It happened again at 4am the next morning, and then again at 6.30am, ending our sleep. When I mentioned it at breakfast, I got the same response. The exterior and views are stunning, but the pool was filthy, with a badly maintained bottom, scum on the water and three dead frogs. I decided it wasn't wise to swim, so there was no pool to enjoy alongside those views. We were the only guests for the entire stay. The staff member and gardener both went home at 4pm, leaving us alone there each evening. We'd been to South Africa before and were okay with that, though I can imagine other guests might feel seriously concerned about security in such an isolated spot. This place has enormous potential, but basic care and maintenance, along with customer service, were lacking. I strongly suggest not booking here, especially if you need to sleep or expect the A/C you booked.
