We only heard about the power outage once we were already seven hours into the drive, just three hours from arrival. Had we known at least 24 hours ahead, we wouldn’t have gone ahead with the stay. Power cuts are common in South Africa, and the houses on the same street had generators and electricity. After driving for 10 hours, we arrived to a freezing, dark place with no electricity, hot water, alarm, wood, or other heating. We’d paid for fully equipped accommodation, and what we found was far from what had been promised. We asked several times for a refund, but she ignored our concerns and told us to book another hotel. That customer service was unacceptable. How could she think it was normal to have paying guests arrive in those conditions without an immediate fix or compensation? We did appreciate the chocolate and wood she brought the next day, but it didn’t make up for that ordeal. The wood needed to be there from the start, so we wouldn’t have had that “horror night” in total darkness.
