The staff were helpful and even let me heat a ready-made meal I’d bought from Checkers in their microwave. The bed was comfortable, at least, though the area outside was pretty noisy at night. One night I heard a thump and felt uneasy opening the cupboard. I left early, and it didn’t seem like there was much to do or see at the Hotel. It’s fine for one night, but that’s about it. I skipped breakfast because R165 seemed too much for what looked like a very basic meal.

I stay here regularly when I’m in welkom for work. The prices are competitive with other options, but I keep coming back because it’s clean and the staff really put in the effort. There’s a cleaning lady every day, and she even moved a fridge into my room when I asked. More than satisfied.

The rooms were really clean, and the bedding and pillows were in good shape. That’s something I often have trouble with at budget hotels, so I was pleasantly surprised. The meals were tasty and felt homely. My colleague loved the beef stew, and even though I’m vegetarian, the staff happily gave me extra potato bake and made a fresh salad to go with it. The staff were friendly and very helpful, too. There’s a lovely garden outside the restaurant, sheltered by a gazebo, where we really enjoyed sitting this time. I left my Apple charger in the room and called the next day. Jan the owner was friendly and posted it back to me that same day. For a place in this star and budget category, it’s great value. You won’t find five-star valets or porters at the door, or marble bathrooms, but that’s not what it offers. When we travel to Welkom again, I’ll ask to stay at Stanville Inn. Please pass on my thanks to all the staff if you read this.

Email replies take a long time, and you have to keep calling to get a response. The staff just seem incompetent. The first time, we arrived for our booking and found the conference room wasn’t ready because they’d forgotten about us. The man asked to set it up complained the whole time, and the speakers didn’t work. We thought it was just an honest mistake and booked again, but it happened again. It wasn’t a one-off.

Breakfast took 30 minutes to arrive, and I was only served after going to ask at reception. The gate has no remote, so you have to ask reception to open it when coming or going, and sometimes you’re left waiting, especially when arriving from outside. The rooms look outdated, the aircon was visibly broken and didn’t work, and the beds were uncomfortable. It was the only place available and is budget accommodation, but the service and experience were still appalling.
