Ljubljana city guide
Where to stay in Ljubljana
Choose between the castle-side Old Town, the western central streets, station-side Tabor, Tivoli and lower Siska, or the riverside neighbourhoods of Trnovo and Krakovo.

Plan your visit
Ljubljana's compact centre makes several bases workable, but the river banks and pedestrian zone still change the arrival and evening routine. Staying beneath the castle differs from staying towards the station, beside Tivoli or south around Trnovo. The best address lets you spend time in the part of the city you actually came for, while keeping the airport or onward coach connection practical.
Choose your base
Choose the castle-side Old Town for heritage lanes and riverside meals, or the western central streets for shopping, cafes and easier access towards the station. Tabor suits cultural venues and rail or coach arrivals, with a more mixed street setting. Tivoli and lower Siska favour park time and music rather than continuous old-town wandering. Trnovo and Krakovo suit a slower riverside stay south of the centre. These are useful walking zones and neighbourhoods, not five newly invented administrative districts.
Castle-side Old Town: heritage lanes and riverside evenings

The east-bank lanes around Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg make the most coherent heritage base. Town Hall, Saint Nicholas Cathedral and the market form one direction of a walk, while the streets towards Gornji trg bring smaller shops, galleries and places to eat beneath Castle Hill. Choose this side when you want early walks and evening meals to begin directly in the historic fabric. A room near the river and one reached farther up the castle slope offer different levels of effort.
The pedestrian core limits vehicle access, so an airport bus arriving at Ljubljana AP does not deliver you to every old-town doorway. LPP stops such as Gornji trg serve the edge rather than all the lanes; confirm the final drop-off and any stairs. Riverside terraces and busy paving can bring noise and luggage friction. Choose the western central streets for a more straightforward station approach, or Trnovo and Krakovo when neighbourhood riverside time matters more than immediate monument access.
Plan it well: Town Hall marks the castle-side historic lanes; the pin is not the entrance to Castle Hill.

Use Preseren Square as the southern reference point for the central streets north and west of the river. Copova supplies a shopping approach, Miklosiceva adds Art Nouveau buildings towards the station, and Slovenska cesta connects the area with the city's bus corridor. Crossing Triple Bridge still brings the market and castle-side lanes into your day. This base suits a first visit when you want central cafes and walking access to heritage sights without committing to a room deep inside the narrower east-bank passages.
LPP stops around Ajdovscina and Bavarski dvor are useful for city connections; Ljubljana's rail and main bus stations are farther north. Arriva's airport route uses Ljubljana AP, leaving a walk or local transfer rather than a direct hotel stop. Accommodation facing Slovenska has different traffic exposure from a pedestrian side street, while square-side rooms can hear evening activity. Choose Tabor for closer cultural and station-side priorities, or Tivoli's edge when park walks are the daily attraction.
Plan it well: Preseren Square is the riverside anchor, not the station or all of the city centre.
Visit Ljubljana: Preseren Square and adjoining streetsTabor and Metelkova: cultural venues and station-side arrivals

Tabor combines a neighbourhood park and the Old Power Station performance venue with the museum cluster at Metelkova. The Slovene Ethnographic Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art add reasons to stay beyond the standard river-and-castle loop. Cafe stops in the quarter and food streets towards Trubarjeva make a mixed cultural day possible without always returning to the postcard centre. This is a better choice for travellers seeking contemporary art or performances than for those wanting a uniformly historic street outside every doorway.
The railway and main coach stations lie north and northwest of the quarter, with LPP's Kolodvor connections helping on arrival. An Arriva airport bus into Ljubljana AP can therefore suit this side, but compare the precise accommodation entrance rather than a general near-station claim. Metelkova's club venues and event calendar can also bring night activity, and station-adjacent roads have their own traffic. Choose Trnovo for a slower neighbourhood evening, or Old Town for a heritage-led short break.
Plan it well: The image and pin show Metelkova within the wider Tabor cultural stay area, not the railway station.

The Tivoli side of the city and lower Siska offer a practical change from the riverside terraces. Park paths, Cekin Mansion and the graphic-arts venues around Tivoli provide outdoor and museum choices, while the Union brewery area and cafes along the Celovska side support a neighbourhood evening. Farther into Siska, Kino Siska adds a substantial music programme. Choose the southern end for easier central walks, or the venue side when a concert is the real reason for the stay.
LPP's Tivoli stop lists line 1 along the Celovska corridor via Stara cerkev and Kino Siska, with central stops such as Ajdovscina in the other direction. For an airport arrival, select a documented stop on the particular intercity departure or connect from Ljubljana AP; do not assume every airport bus stops by the park. The compromises are traffic along Celovska and extra distance from the market and castle. The central streets are a better fit for repeated short sightseeing returns.
Plan it well: The pin and photograph show Tivoli Park at the green end of this base, not Kino Siska.

Trnovo and Krakovo lie south of the busiest central loop, with the Gradascica channel, Plecnik's bridge and the architect's former home giving the neighbourhood a clear identity. Walking towards the Ljubljanica and along Krakovski nasip creates a different start to the day from standing on Preseren Square. Small cafes and local dining around the river and neighbourhood streets suit travellers who want to linger rather than complete the main sights in one compressed circuit. Check whether the address is near the bridge or farther into residential Trnovo.
LPP's published 19B and 19I stop lists include Trnovo and central connections through Gornji trg, Drama and Bavarski dvor. The airport service is a separate intercity journey to Ljubljana AP, so allow a local leg afterwards. This base trades station convenience and immediate market access for a less concentrated visitor setting; it is not a promise that every street is silent. Choose Tabor for onward trains or the central streets for a short first stay.
Plan it well: The photograph and pin identify Trnovo Bridge linking Krakovo and Trnovo, not the wider administrative district.

Airport buses and city buses are separate journeys
Arriva confirms its Brnik-Ljubljana airport route. Use its dated timetable to select the actual service and destination, then arrange the final approach from Ljubljana AP rather than assuming a city-bus ticket or route number is an airport connection.
Arriva: current timetablesVerify boarding arrangements
Arriva distinguishes airport boarding from a staffed station counter, including Ljubljana Bus Station. Check the current ticket method for your departure rather than relying on an old airport guide.

LPP's Tivoli stop information lists line 1 through Stara cerkev and Kino Siska towards the outer city, and central stops in the opposite direction. Use the specific direction and stop for your address.
LPP: Tivoli routes and departuresTrnovo needs its own final leg
LPP's current stop lists show 19B and 19I via Trnovo, Gornji trg, Drama and Bavarski dvor. Check the departure and correct branch before treating a neighbourhood address as a station-side stay.

The Kavalir operates within the pedestrian zone and is primarily intended to help older and mobility-impaired passengers. Confirm accommodation access separately; it is not an airport transfer or a guaranteed luggage service.
Visit Ljubljana: Kavalir and the pedestrian zoneCompare Ljubljana hotels by neighbourhood routine
Compare hotels in Ljubljana by the walk you expect to make most often. In Old Town, inspect pedestrian access and stairs; in the central streets, balance station access with room orientation. Tabor works for cultural programmes and arrivals, Tivoli for green time, and Trnovo for a slower riverside routine. Check the exact entrance and named bus stop before choosing on a city-centre label alone.
