The bed was comfortable and the nights were quiet, so I gave the hotel 3 stars despite the rest of the experience. I spent six nights in room 308, which was spacious, with a separate living room and a small balcony. The air conditioning worked very well, and the living room seemed clean. The bathroom, though, clearly hadn't been cleaned. I counted 12 hairs on the floor before giving up, found long and short beard hairs in the sink, and saw hairs and urine marks in the toilet. I've never checked into a hotel and encountered that before. The mini bar was so loud I unplugged it. With temperatures in Yerevan in the high 30s Celsius all week, having a working fridge would have helped keep my water cold, and not having one made the stay worse. The receptionist who checked me in and out was kind. The other Macao Hotel staff were among the least customer service oriented I've encountered in years of spending a fifth of each year in hotels around the world. They don't speak English. I speak Russian, so on the morning of day three I asked the two women at reception, not the one who checked me in, to clean my room. They asked which room I was in, even though I'd already been there two nights and at most three other rooms seemed occupied. I left the “please clean my room” sign on the door as well as telling them, but when I returned that evening, nothing had been done. I chose to have my room cleaned just once during the stay for environmental reasons. There was no kettle, which wasn't a big issue in summer but would make it hard to boil water for tea in the cold season. The WiFi was weak and sometimes stopped working, probably when other guests were streaming video; it's one open connection for the whole hotel. The menu has over 40 dishes, but there isn't a proper restaurant, and there's no sign indicating one, even though there are popular restaurants in the area. On my first evening I was too tired to go out, but didn't feel comfortable eating at the hotel, so I went to bed hungry. I didn't eat breakfast there either.
