The manager was friendly and happy to help, but I left after just one night of a two-night booking because the facilities didn’t make for a comfortable stay. Room 5 seemed overdue for repainting and a proper deep clean. The mattress was so worn that when I lay down, I sank into it like a cocoon. My towel had been white, but was now grey with yellow stains. There was a stale smell of cigarette smoke and dust, and since the room was beside the kitchen and common room, I could hear everything and couldn’t rest. Breakfast was a croissant and a bread roll with jam or Nutella if you wanted it. The roll was so dry it crumbled in my hands, which made up my mind to find somewhere else. I was also charged 21% VAT, although Booking.com said it wouldn’t be charged if I paid by card and provided documentation. The manager said Booking.com “not understanding the situation” was the reason. My next accommodation didn’t charge VAT, and cost less for much better facilities. I’d usually bring the issues with the room to management, but these felt like long-running problems that wouldn’t be fixed. Older reviews make it sound as if this hostel had its best days already. The facilities now don’t meet what travellers should expect, and I’d avoid it since there are better choices for both cost and facilities.
