Las Terrazas Hotel Boutique

The hotel’s grounds were peaceful and nicely landscaped, and the terrace views were wonderful. We stayed two nights, but the value didn’t work for us, and we’d choose somewhere else next time in Tilcara. Breakfast was very limited and often sold out despite there being few guests, so we kept waiting for bread, ham, and cheese. Our towels were stained every day, even though the house rules warn guests about extra cleaning charges for stains. We also found the ban on bringing in our own drinks patronizing. We’d rather choose for ourselves what to drink.

We were on our honeymoon, but that wasn’t acknowledged at check-in or in the room. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, just disappointing. The place looks great and has a nice atmosphere, but for this nightly price I’d expect a lot more. The room was roomy and comfortable, though dirty, with hairs in the shower and beside the bed, and a clogged shower drain. The blackout curtains by the bed didn’t help much because the bathroom had no door and no curtains, so daylight woke us early. WiFi barely reached our room. Reception suggested another network, but we could only pick up one weakly. The unheated pool was very cold after the chilly nights, and the water looked murky; the plastic loungers were dirty and had no cushions. Breakfast was decent, but the butter, jams, and other spreads came in small packaged portions, with nothing fresh. At check-in we got no information about breakfast, the pool, the restaurant, or anything else, just the key. With the hotel up a hill at 2500m, help with luggage would have been welcome, but nobody offered it. We could hear every birthday party in town below. Tilcara works as a base for nearby sights, though there’s not much to do in town beyond restaurants and bars. There are plenty of reasons this place might be nice, but at half the price.

The rooms were clean and spacious, and I liked the cactus gardens and small pool. The staff weren’t unfriendly, but they didn’t seem very attentive. At breakfast we had to ask for everything, and there didn’t seem to be anyone making sure guests came first. It lacked hospitality. There’s a Nespresso machine in the lobby, which is nice, but charging us for every used capsule the next day without telling us first felt petty.
