Gasthof Steinbräu

I visited in mid-May, when the weather was pretty cold, and the Brunner family had the heating on. The guesthouse may not be the newest, but the owners bring a lot of warmth and charm to the way they run it. It's a good place for families with kids, who are welcomed warmly and have lots of room to play.

The pool was refreshing in the hot weather, though getting to it meant crossing tall grass and molehills along a rough path. It can leave you feeling like guests are just a means to an end. The landlady does try her best, but I can't recommend Gasthof Steinbräu in good conscience. The rooms have a strong 70s feel, from the furniture and carpets to the pictures, grounds and layout. I was surprised there was internet, but it only worked in the lobby within about two metres, with no signal in the room. The TV wouldn't turn on because its power cord was too short; I shifted it 1.5 metres to the right and it worked, though there were no HD channels. The ceiling-height bathroom and toilet tiles felt oppressive, and the sound carried so much that you could hear other guests showering or using the toilet. The shower ventilation shaft looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages, with cobwebs to show for it. Breakfast was the same sausage and cheese every day, though there was scrambled or boiled egg too. Several room lights still had 20-watt incandescent bulbs, and one bulb in each room was broken. The stairwell was barely clean, with dark stains on nearly every step.

We were lucky to find somewhere to sleep, since this was the only place nearby with a room available, but the stay itself was pretty miserable. The rooms are a very low standard, with sagging mattresses, very old equipment and photos that didn't match reality. Breakfast was dull and not suitable for children. The place seemed dirty, and the style felt like a jumble of mismatched things. It seems time stopped here 50 years ago. The swimming pool was a plus, though it was often being used by the owners and their friends. We knew it was by the road, and the village felt very dead.

The setting was idyllic and just right for resting and unwinding. We visited at the end of August, and the owners were very friendly and always willing to hear our requests. Thank you so much!
