Stoffbauer

People in Graz kept recommending Stoffbauer, especially for the backhandl, so I had to try it. They were right about that dish. I’ve eaten fried chicken in the US and elsewhere, but this was the best I’ve ever had. The coating was perfectly cooked, crunchy with an almost glassy crust, and full of flavor. Getting the chicken coated and cooked that evenly is no small thing, and Stoffbauer has nailed it. I started with fleischstrudelsuppe. The broth was rich and meaty, and the dumplings were tasty too, with well-spiced meat and dough that was neither too soft nor chewy. For a side with the backhandl, I got Knödel in gravy. The Knödel was one of my favorites in Austria, and the rich, meaty sauce, a bit like demi glaze, went perfectly with it. The location is absolutely beautiful, and the meal was just perfect. I’ll be recommending this place too!

Good value for the price, and a lovely quiet spot in the woods of Graz. The menu has that classic Austrian heurigen style.

Stoffbauer Hotel & Restaurant really makes you feel at home. I couldn't make use of the garden, unfortunately, but the genuine Austrian fried "Händl", tender chicken with a crunchy coating, is a must if you're just stopping by to eat. I highly recommend it when you're in Graz. It's also a great place to stay.

Out in the countryside but still close to the city, this is a great spot. Food lovers should try the deep fried chicken liver. You don't find that dish much these days, and it was very tasty here!
