Drei Hasen

This is a charming country hotel right in the heart of Mariazell, run by a family that’s been at it for six generations. The son now runs it, bringing worldly experience and a serious whiskey collection, which is his passion. It isn’t a luxury five-star place, but it has that personal feel where everyone knows your name. They know how to look after guests, and the food is delicious.

The restaurant was pleasant enough, and the staff were very friendly and made the place feel welcoming. A vegan has very little choice, though: while everyone else had soups and desserts, I could pick between two main dishes and have a salad. If whisky is your thing, it’s a great spot. My room was one of the old ones, dated but basically okay. The bathroom was mostly fine, but the shower was awful. It took ten minutes for the water to heat up, then the hot water pressure couldn’t keep the switch up for the shower head. I had to choose between a cold shower or holding the shower head over my head myself at an awkward angle. Worst shower I’ve had in years, in room 106. I also asked for a feather-free pillow, but it never arrived. I was glad I only stayed one night, and wouldn’t come back.

Breakfast was wonderful, and I’d stay here again on another trip to attractive Mariazell. My room was on the third floor at the back, quiet without traffic noise, comfortable, and had a view. Parking behind the hotel worked fine, though it’s downhill and takes a short climb back up.

A really nice place, with good food and service. Kids are welcome and have lots to do while their parents relax over a meal.
