Pension Bertrand

The room we eventually moved to was somewhat better, but finding hair in the shower and grit in the bed made us question whether it had been cleaned. I don't mind older furnishings, though cleanliness needs attention. We had booked a room with a bathroom and balcony, but the first room had little beyond a bed and a hanger, with nowhere to put our belongings. The terrace handle had been removed, and the owner said it was locked for security reasons. We canceled the food immediately, so I can't comment on it. We chose Bertrand Guesthouse for our summer trip after seeing its photos on travelking.cz. We weren't expecting luxury, but the arrival in Pruggern still shocked us. The guesthouse looked different from the pictures, and instead of the neat lawn and loungers we expected, there was a construction site, two cars blocking the entrance, clutter, and only a couple of worn benches with dirty, wet cushions. The photos I attached showed what we had expected. There was no warm welcome from the owner or staff, and it was hard to find anyone to check us in. The house was empty, and we later learned nobody else was staying there. Just inside the front door, there was an unpleasant mix of kitchen stench and mustiness. The neglected surroundings, dirt, smell, and the owner's unwilling manner made for a terrible stay. I'm convinced the guesthouse photo is a composite; it never looked that way in person and probably never will. We definitely don't recommend it.

The rooms were clean and cozy, with a lovely mountain view, and the mattresses were very comfortable. The owners were really friendly too. Breakfast and dinner were generous and varied, and we enjoyed everything. I'd gladly return. I only wish I could give more than five stars. Thank you so much.

A nice spot for a family, an individual, or a group of moderate size. The operator and chef, who is from Slovakia, knows the area and can suggest places for cross-country skiing without long queues. Breakfast is standard, but dinner is worth ordering.

Getting there by car is excellent, and breakfast had a good variety with enough to choose from. The staff were very friendly, and the guesthouse was what we expected for the price. The hallway toilet was disclosed in advance. The mattresses, though, should be replaced.
