Hotel Gundolf

The location was superb, the staff exceptionally friendly and the food delicious. I had a beautiful stay and was impressed by how well equipped the room was, right down to little things like an umbrella and a backpack. The hotel also provided a free one-time cable car pass, which added a lot of value to the stay.

We spent just one night here at the end of a longer ski holiday, but I’ll definitely return for longer. The food was high quality, our room was nice, and the service was attentive and very friendly. Little touches made us feel welcome, including fresh fruit on arrival and rucksacks in the room to borrow for hikes.

Review 04/2025 The hotel has two four-level buildings, connected by hallways on the second and third floors, and two elevators. The main entrance leads to reception, the bar and lounge, and the sun terrace. A second, night entrance leads to the ski room, wellness area and wine cellar. Getting around on foot: the bus station is a one-minute walk away, with free rides if you wear ski clothing. Riffleseebahn cable car is 10 minutes away, about 1 km, and the Gletscher station is a 20-minute walk, about 2 km. Tickets for all three cable cars to reach Riffle lake and the Glecier cost 54eur/pers. Free parking is available around the hotel and across the street, mostly on a dirty, unpaved and unmarked road. There are two electric charging stations at 0.5eur/kW. Bar prices: a 1l bottle of water is 5.1eur, 0.5l beer 5.2eur, coffee 3.7eur, and a 125ml house wine 6.1eur. During happy hour, 17:30-18:30, a glass of white or rose prosecco is 3.5eur. Opening hours are reception 08:00-21:00, fitness 07:00-22:00, breakfast 07:30-10:00, whirlpool 07:00-09:00, wellness area 14:00-19:00, afternoon buffet 15:00-17:00, and dinner 18:00-19:30. The restaurant 'Beim Sclussler' serves hotel guests and outsiders. The wellness area has two levels, with saunas and massage and body wrap rooms. The sauna area requires entry without clothes or bathing suits. Bathrobes cost an extra 5eur/pers. Free drinks and snacks include tap water, hot tea, juice, nuts, dried fruit and fresh apples. Private spa access and use is available 20:00-22:00 for an extra 95eur for 2 pers, with each additional person paying 10eur. Facilities include a herbal sauna, Finnish sauna, saline grotto or cave, dry sauna, herbal steam room, ritual sensory showers after sauna sessions, panorama relaxation room, water beds room and quiet room. The room has Tyrolean-style furnishings. Welcome treats include fresh apples, one bottle of water and small bonbons on the pillow. The bathroom comes with complimentary toiletries in small and big sizes and towels. There’s also a bag with special spa towels, two per person, plus free use of a hiking backpack and one umbrella. The balcony has outdoor seating and a mountain view, and there’s a corner seating area with a table and chairs. Extra costs: local taxes are 3eur/pers/nights and the weekend surcharge is 30eur/pers/night. Verwöhnpension, which includes an afternoon snack and a five-course dinner, costs 55eur/pers/night. Drinks aren’t included, and there was no visible or available free tap-water option. The afternoon snack buffet is self-service, with assorted cold salads and make-your-own fresh green leaf salad with toppings and dressings, sponge cakes and pies, fresh fruit, soups and breads such as buns and rolls. The five-course dinner combines a self-service buffet with served main dishes chosen in advance, including vegetarian options.

What made our stay so stressful was the service around meals. We often felt unwelcome rather than treated as guests. One waiter was extremely unfriendly, even rude, and kept chasing us after 9.30 even when we’d stopped taking food from the buffet and only wanted to finish our coffee. We usually arrived around 9.00, and the other waiters weren’t strict about the closing time. Breakfast is listed as 7.30 to 9.30, which feels short when you’re on holiday. The rude waiter also repeatedly asked whether we wanted every course at dinner and tried to take our cutlery before we could answer, assuming we wouldn’t have soup, the salad bar and so on. It was really annoying, and we almost felt guilty for eating meals we’d paid for. Our two small children weren’t given glasses for the bottle of water we ordered, so we had to ask every time. Apparently kids need to drink too. If you ask for a glass of red wine without specifying, they serve the most expensive one; with cola, they automatically bring a large one unless you specify. The restaurant’s official evening hours are 18.30 to 19.30, which leaves an hour for a five-course meal. The breakfast itself was good, but the choice was limited, the same every day and not replenished. All week there was no brown bread or cake after 9, and the yoghurt also ran out without being refilled. That’s disappointing for a four-star hotel. Dinner tasted good, though it wasn’t seasoned enough. We had trouble paying when leaving, too. We wanted to settle the extra charge the night before, but were told the computer had already been shut off. The next morning we wanted to leave early for the long drive home, but were told we couldn’t pay until the desk opened at 8.00. We had to wait half an hour with our two small kids while a woman ate breakfast near reception. When we paid, she said nothing, didn’t ask how the holiday had been, wish us a safe journey, or acknowledge the children. The hotel staff, including members of the owning family Knabbl, were unfriendly and not very helpful. I’ve never encountered this kind of unfriendliness before. We regret spending so much money here and will never return or recommend it. There are far better, nicer hotels for this price. The hotel recently went from three to four stars, which is absolutely not justified. We’d strongly recommend that the family Knabbl take some courses in friendliness and hospitality.
