The setting is beautiful and the food was good, but the service was completely unacceptable. Our private tour guide brought us here for lunch. The waiter, who our guide said had worked there for nearly two decades, forgot our dessert order. It was one that needed to be ordered early because it took time to prepare, and by the time we noticed, we no longer had time to wait. He didn’t apologize or try to fix it. Paying was another ordeal. His phone-style card reader couldn’t read my two American Express cards, Visa, or Mastercard. He just stood there silently, waiting for another card instead of troubleshooting, offering another option, or getting a different terminal. I eventually worked out that it couldn’t read metal cards, and luckily had a plastic one I rarely use. Our guide later said the waiter could have brought a proper dedicated reader that would have worked, but chose not to. Whether that was laziness or a preference for cash, neither is acceptable. This hotel restaurant serves international tourists. Metal credit cards may be unusual in Austria, but they’re common among travelers. Not handling a basic payment method and showing such indifference about it is unacceptable.
We had problems with the service throughout the stay. When we arrived, there was no night porter around. We waited five minutes, then I drove another five minutes to park and came back. At these prices, they should park the car for you. Beforehand, we’d requested a gluten-free meal for a child, but the only choices they offered were veal or arctic char. The menu was limited, and several things went wrong during our one dinner there. The staff tried to make things better, but the problems affected the experience. Later we called housekeeping to ask if we could use the vacuum briefly. The reception phone didn’t work, and we had to go down to the desk three times over an hour before anyone came up. Management is poor and honestly seems hostile toward guests who expect decent service at these high prices. What are you paying for? Save your money and stay somewhere else, or go to Worthersee.
I’ve been coming to St. Wolfgang and the White Horse Inn for about 50 years, and my wife and I even spent our honeymoon in the honeymoon suite there. Tonight, though, was a disaster, mostly because of the service. My wife and I brought two friends for dinner, and we had booked a table. After we were shown to it, we waited around 20 minutes for menus. Then they asked for our drinks order, and eventually brought the food, which was very good. Once we’d finished our mains, they only partly cleared the plates, leaving dirty dishes behind. We waited over 30 minutes for dessert menus, but none came, and the table was ignored. My wife speaks German, so she went to complain to the man who seemed to be the head waiter, but he ignored her. Extremely rude. She managed to ask for the bill and tell him to forget dessert. All four of us felt unwelcome. I don’t know if that was because we’re English, but it certainly seemed that way.
We only checked in for a day at the day spa, so I can’t comment on the rooms, but this experience would put me off staying here. On the way in, a man was greeting other people and opening the door for them. When we approached, he went inside, let the door close, and stood there so he wouldn’t have to greet us or open it. Once we were in, he said nothing. The receptionist came out with an aggressive attitude and no welcome or other pleasantries. We weren’t sure we’d arrived at the right hotel, so we asked if it was the Romantik hotel. She rudely said yes and asked what we needed. The way she spoke to us throughout check-in made the whole process uncomfortable and gave the impression we didn’t belong. I was put off and honestly didn’t want to stay, but we’d come from another country, so we stayed until our time was up. The cleaners and the cafe/bar servers we met were very nice. There didn’t seem to be many people around the hotel or outside in the spa area, and the spa cafe food was good. I’d hoped the customer service would make me want to return for a proper stay, but it seems some people working here have a problem with Black people. Sadly, that’s unfortunate.
I was unhappy with how the breakfast seating was handled. I paid to stay at the hotel, yet my group was given seats without a view, even though Theresa said the tables by the glass had one. I understand that some guests were staying for 10 nights and the Japanese groups for 2, but that didn't make it fair to send my group inside. No other guests had arrived yet, and as the biggest hotel manager, I could have arranged anything. We came to rest and enjoy the view, not deal with service like this. There was also an issue with the luggage. When he got angry, he said the car was parked far away and they wouldn't let him carry it. Should a hotel have staff like that?
