Haus Bergland

The setting is beautiful and the location is terrific. Everything was very clean and tidy, with the facilities you'd hope for in a self-catering holiday. Schafberg bahnhof is about a 10-minute walk away, and watching the train pass right outside the house is quite a sight. A few things made the stay less comfortable. The toilet and bathroom are separate, but there is no sink in the toilet. The bathroom also has no door, which felt embarrassing. The listing said the lake was two minutes away, but it took us about 20 minutes. I assume that was a typo rather than a deliberate attempt to mislead. The €1.90 per person per night tax was not mentioned on the booking page. Downstairs guests smoked constantly, so opening the windows meant cigarette smoke coming in. A washer and dryer would have been useful. Some guidance on nearby supermarkets and regional attractions would also have helped.

I'm speechless.

The lake is beautiful, clear, and blue, and the place has a romantic feel. Haus Bergland is a fairly large, classic Austrian house with around four apartments, but its style seems frozen in the 1980s. It sits beside a mountain stream that murmurs beautifully at night and next to the cogwheel railway, which carries tourists uphill by steam and diesel during the day. The bedroom grates creaked terribly. The girls slept on the living-room sofa bed, where there was a TV we never turned on. The balcony had a table and four chairs, with a lovely view of the lake, Ried, and St. Wolfgang. In the kitchenette there was a refrigerator, stove, kettle, dishwasher, and drip coffee maker (80Ky). The shower had a plastic soap holder, and there was a sink and separate toilet. Rugs, pictures, and dust-catching ornaments like kittens, glasses, and paperweights were everywhere. Booking gave me a 10% discount, but I then had to pay the provider about that amount in cash: 3€ per person per day and 9€ per day for the dog. St. Wolfgang is lovely and, surprisingly, full of Japanese and Korean visitors and families with mothers wearing scarves.
