Rief's Pension Garni

The apartment had been booked for our whole stay, but when we wanted to keep the key with us while hiking, the hostess threatened to call the police. The house information said keys aren’t managed. Visits from family or friends during the day are also banned. That was hard to prohibit legally, and this rule wasn’t on the booking.com listing when we stayed. It’s there now, but should be stated in German too and made more prominent, perhaps right at the start. As it’s currently worded, it seems legally questionable. Tannheim itself is beautiful, but our stay here was anything but relaxing. The hostess was unfriendly, and we felt watched all the time. There’s also an “adults only” policy, yet small children were running and making the sort of noise children do in the yard while we were there. We were there in August, and I wanted to share my impressions. I can’t recommend this accommodation. If you’re looking for a stress-free holiday, I’d find somewhere else.

We’ve now stayed with Familie Rief for the third time and have always been very happy with the warm, family-style welcome. The value for money is always top notch. The apartments are lovely and well laid out for their size, and there’s always help and an answer if a question or problem comes up. Guided hikes are offered in summer too. In the evenings, it’s nice to wind down on the terrace and have an interesting chat now and then. Everything has been great, and we’ll definitely be back.

The room was very clean and came with a small kitchenette. Ms. Rief welcomed us warmly and went through everything in detail. After a day hiking, we could sit in the sun on the balcony until it went behind the mountain. Restaurants and a supermarket are an easy walk away, and our host gave us some great advice about snowshoeing and winter walks.

The rooms are actually very nice and clean, and the house is centrally located. We did have a look, but only because we tried to see the rooms while a family was staying there, and the owner very clearly and rudely refused to let us in. I’ve been visiting beautiful Tannheim every year for over 35 years and have never had an experience like that. It’s sad for such an idyllic place, where people are otherwise incredibly friendly, courteous and lovely. We come back to the Tannheim Valley every year, but we won’t stay at this house.
