The constant noise at night was the last straw. The apartment’s front door had no soundproofing, so every time someone came into the building it sounded like they were inside with us. People went in and out during the night and kept waking us. We ended up leaving after just one day, although we were supposed to stay four, and booked another apartment. It was the first time in my life I’d left a place like that. Problems started as soon as we arrived, and I spent endless time contacting the person in charge and trying to fix things myself. The place also looked different from what we’d seen online. There was an unpleasant smell when we entered. I don’t know where it came from, but maybe it was the food “leftovers” we found in the freezer. We couldn’t get a proper dinner together because the dining area was so cramped it might fit one or two people, but certainly not a family of four. There were also ants in the rooms, probably because previous visitors ate there, since there wasn’t a decent dining area. The washing machine situation was confusing. I asked the representative if it was also a dryer because we couldn’t see one. He first said there was no dryer, only a hair dryer, then said he’d been mistaken and the machine could dry clothes too. He told me which button to press, but the clothes were still wet in the morning, with nowhere to hang them. When I was getting the kids ready to shower, I saw the glass shower door was off its rail, dangling and nearly falling. I told the man it was dangerous, and he said someone would check it the next day. I eventually fixed it myself so we could shower safely. Then we found there was no hot water. The man helped me change the water heater settings, which had been too low, and we finally got some hot water. There was no body soap or shampoo as promised either. By then it was late, so we had to shower with hand soap. The Wi-Fi kept breaking up every few minutes while I was trying to sort out all the other problems. The signal was weak even right beside the router, and disappeared once you were about two metres away or more. The man told me to reset the router and try other things, but nothing really changed.

We spent an hour trying to find the place because they sent the wrong address. The worst place to stay.

The price is quite low for a central location, but the place itself is uncomfortable. It’s noisy and dirty, and some things are broken.

If you just want somewhere simple and convenient, this could work. For everyone else, good hotels nearby cost only a little more. The provider requires a five-star rating, but it definitely doesn’t deserve that, especially since the booking photos didn’t match what was there. The location is central, close to Rennweg, with trams and buses nearby and a metro station about 300 metres away. You can walk to the city centre and Vienna’s Old Town in about 30 minutes. Breakfast is available nearby, with an easy option at the subway entrance. If you drive, there’s only resident parking in the area and police check several times a day. The nearby garage is on Ungarngasse, beside the subway station. We booked a two-bedroom apartment on Rennweg according to Booking.com, but the property was on Stanislausgasse, a side street. We only got that information by email on arrival day, and the Booking.com photos didn’t show the actual property. The building is rather run-down, with a daycare centre on the ground floor. Nothing against children, they have a right to childcare, but the building has a 1960s and 70s feel and doesn’t seem to have had significant renovations. Calling the unit an apartment feels like a stretch. It’s adequate for tradespeople. It was clean enough if you’re not too picky, and had one bedroom, a living room with a TV and a sofa bed for extra guests, a bathroom, a toilet, and a kitchen. There’s a kettle, coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi, which you can access through the router or the provider’s email shortly before check-in. The cups and plates are an assortment, each one different.
