Pension Schnbrunn Vienna

The building is more than a century old and was built in the late Art Nouveau style. Pension Schönbrunn is well placed for exploring Vienna, about 400 meters from Schönbrunn Palace, near the western entrance to the city centre, and a four-minute walk from the metro. Stalin came to Vienna between January and February 1913 at Lenin’s request, to study how different peoples were treated in the multi-ethnic Danubian Monarchy. He stayed in this house with the Russian émigré couple Alexander Antonovich and Elena R. Troyanovsky. The City Council of Vienna still preserves Stalin’s commemorative plaque. It is the only one in the West honoring the Soviet dictator to remain after the fall of communism. During the 1956 Hungarian uprising, protesters sprayed it with paint, but the city later restored it. Another plaque was added in 2012 in memory of the victims of Stalinism.

We had a quiet, spacious double room facing the garden, and the management were friendly and accommodating. They gave us very useful advice about public transport routes and schedules using a map of Vienna. The underground garage at the hotel was a real plus, and with the subway about a five-minute walk away we could easily get around to the sights during our stay. The hotel is on the main road into the city centre and only a few minutes from Schönbrunn Palace. We had a stress-free visit and would gladly recommend the hotel. We’d be happy to return.

The furnishings are a little dated, but everything is very well looked after. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the garage is less than 10 meters from the entrance. Schönbrunn Palace is around 400 meters away, with the subway close by too. A great guesthouse, highly recommended for a Vienna stay.

Our room was quiet and faced the courtyard, with good Wi-Fi reception. It was very clean apart from a hair in the sink, though there was no air conditioning. We’d been assigned the smallest room according to the evacuation plan, so it felt cramped. The bathroom fittings, furnishings, and bed are all showing their age. The location is fantastic, right next to the subway and Schönbrunn Palace. Staff were attentive and friendly, with great excursion tips. Breakfast wasn’t a huge buffet, but it was perfectly adequate, and €9 a night for underground parking seemed reasonable. For Vienna, the price-performance ratio is good.
