We stayed in a cozy little hostal with 12 rooms, run by a very kind family. Our room slept four and had a shower bathroom. They offer B&B, and dinner can also be arranged with the restaurant next door. It’s an ideal spot for skiing in Ikarus, with a free shuttle in both directions. If you’d like to use the sauna, ask in the morning and they can have it ready that evening. Eating out in town can be tricky, so reserve a table where you want to go ahead of time.

The homemade wildberry jam was a highlight, and breakfast each day had a good range of typical Austrian buffet choices, with more always offered cheerfully. Katharina and the team were so welcoming and kept everything clean and tidy. All the rooms have Alpine views, and the place has parking, a pool, a garden and games such as table tennis. Haus Alpina offers great value for its price, location and facilities. It’s a short walk to the town centre, but the setting still feels wonderfully quiet and out of town. A classic Austrian Gasthaus. We’ll be back to wonderful Werfenweng.

The garden pool is heated, which made it lovely for the children. The owner was very friendly, and the accommodation was really nice. One tip: get the Werfenweng Card for the many free regional options, including an electric car and unlimited taxi and shuttle transport.
