The place was dirty and falling apart, and we barely slept. The floors were grimy, the couch was disgusting, and the toilet took forever to refill and barely worked. One bedroom door was completely off its hinges, the other doors screeched, and the bathroom door had strange gaps. There was even a window between the bathroom and toilet, so privacy seemed optional. The bedroom light didn’t work, Wi-Fi was unreliable, Netflix wouldn’t load, and the DVD player had no remote. With no streaming either, we mostly sat there looking at the greasy floors and regretting our choices. The air-conditioning was broken. These things happen, but apparently it had failed earlier in the week and no one told us until we checked in on the Saturday of a long weekend. The next cheapest option cost $700 more for two nights, so we had little choice but to stay. We slept with the balcony doors open and listened to cars revving all night like it was Bathurst. Zero sleep, 10/10 noise pollution. If you want loud nights, broken everything and a thoroughly miserable stay, this place is for you. Otherwise, I’d pick literally anywhere else.

We had a lovely view across to the beach, though which apartment you get makes a difference because of the building’s design. On arrival we found a large cockroach, and saw more during our stay. The apartment wasn’t cleaned properly after the previous guests: there was hair on the floors and in the drains, sand around the place, and dirty pots, glasses and a pan in the kitchen. A lot of the utensils and equipment need replacing too. Several things didn’t work right, including the dryer, some lights, DVD player and Wi-Fi. The fridge leaked from the water dispenser. Parking was another hassle, as the space is very tight and awkward to get in and out of, so larger cars may struggle. It’s cheap and convenient near the beach, but if you’re hoping for more comfort or anything luxurious, I’d look elsewhere.

The balcony floor was dirty, the beds were the most uncomfortable ever, and parking underneath the building was extremely tight. There’s no exhaust fan in the kitchen, so don’t plan on cooking. For $409 for one night, even on Easter Monday, it felt like a rip-off. This accommodation is more like two stars than three, and I’d 100% not recommend it. Apartment 5 was supposedly recently ‘done up’, according to a very young staff member. The balcony screen door off the master bedroom had a broken lock and couldn’t be unlocked or opened. Rubbish from previous occupants was left on the bedroom and lounge floors, coffee table and couch. After dinner with our family, we discovered that staff had left the lounge balcony screen door unlocked after cleaning. Luckily, our things were still there, but it was a low-level room. There was also a dirty ashtray on the balcony table, even though smoking on balconies and in apartments has been banned in QLD since 01/05/2024. The only air-conditioning is in the living area, and you just have to hope like hell it reaches the ‘Master Bedrrom’. The balcony doors wouldn’t open, and the fan whined. It was extremely noisy on the main road, with loud cars revving for much of the night. The ‘Master Bedroom’ in quotes because there’s nothing master about it. Management may try to refute this review as it has with others, but it’s ALL TRUE!!! This place needs major upgrading or tearing down. It’s unkempt and grubby, poorly run, and reminds me of somewhere that was acceptable in the 1970s.

The one thing going for the place is its location, right across from the beach. We got a cheap deal and were only there to sleep, but couldn’t even do that. We expected somewhere outdated but comfortable. Instead, it was absolutely insufferable, and the holiday was awful. We regret the time and money spent and will be raising the issues with Booking.com. Avoid this hotel. They told us at check-in that the air-conditioning had broken earlier in the week. The building is old, made of concrete and brick, and trapped the heat, so it was much hotter inside than outside. The man reassured us there was a breeze, and we were told the air-con fan mode would work, but that fan was broken too. The hotel said there were two options: cancel in advance, or tell us on arrival so we could cancel and find somewhere else. We were given that option at check-in, yes, but it was the first day of a long weekend. Anyone with common sense knows you’re unlikely to find another beachside place, or really any place, in Alex Heads then. The next cheapest hotel was $700 more for two nights, with only about three options available and the rest even dearer. We either had to drive three hours home after our three-hour drive up that morning or stay. They said the room got a breeze and the fan setting would work, so we stayed. We would have cancelled if we’d been told earlier in the week. Given a week’s notice, we might have found a couple more options or changed our plans and come another time. You withheld the truth and gave us no REAL option. With no air-con, we had to leave the bedroom window open. In one room the blind clanked all night; in the other, street noise went on until 3am. With the balcony doors open, the road noise drowned everything out in the lounge too. We all got about three hours of broken sleep each night. We were so desperate to get away that we packed at 1am on the second night and nearly drove the two and a half hours home. There were plenty of other problems. A friend got stuck when a bedroom door came off its hinges, and we had to lift it and leave it open for the whole stay. Other doors stuck and screeched. The bedroom light had no bulb, so we relied on a tiny, dim lamp and kept bumping into the bed frame. The floors were dirty and greasy, so we wore shoes the whole time. The couch was stained, uncomfortable and ratty. The bathroom and toilet had a massive gap in the wall, so we could see and hear people while in there. The toilet sometimes wouldn’t flush and took ages to refill. We got only one and a half rolls of toilet paper for a two-bedroom apartment, with no spares anywhere, and the shower soap was extremely watered down. Wi-Fi didn’t work on all devices. We only realised it was broken at 11pm and didn’t want to call the support number on someone’s mobile so late. Netflix wouldn’t load, and the DVD player had no remote. Long review, but the short version is this was a miserable stay. There was no one at reception when we checked out, just a sign saying they were elsewhere in the property, so we complained to Booking.com and emailed the hotel. After a week, the hotel still hadn’t replied. When Booking.com called them on 5/2, I was told the hotel answered and HUNG UP on them. Amazing service! * ADDING TO MY REVIEW * - I can’t respond to their reply, and want future guests to know what happened. Photos attached for evidence.

I didn’t feel comfortable staying here and found somewhere else after I arrived. I was travelling alone, and the room key was an ordinary one that anyone could have had cut at a locksmith or hardware store. The room smelled, and the small air conditioner was in a spot where it wouldn’t reach the bedroom. It was also very dingy and dated. The location is great, which makes the accommodation a shame.
