The main drawback was the lack of heating or cooling. I was there in late May, and the room got quite cold overnight. I could also hear the neighbouring unit a little through the shared brick walls. There’s a double-sliding window with Venetian blinds facing the main road. Still, Room 26, across from the hotel administration, was clean and good value at about $210 per night. It had a double bed and a single bed, both comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep, plus a large wall-mounted TV. The shower had great temperature and adequate pressure, and soap and towels were supplied. There was also a security chain on the door. A kettle, toaster, fridge, small carton of milk, tea, coffee, sugar and basic cutlery were provided. Outside, there was seating for two and parking for up to two vehicles right by the room, though the driveway incline was fairly steep, around 15-20%. Check-in and checkout were easy. When leaving, I locked the door and left the key inside. A coffee shop and bottle shop were less than a two-minute walk away, and the BP petrol station was less than a minute’s drive from the hotel.

Waking up to the sun over the river and its mouth was lovely. The reception lady was awesome and really helpful, and late check-in was easy. The rooms are clean and decent for a night, with what we needed, but they’re very basic and have a 1970s look and feel. It worked for us, though if you’re after modern finishes, this isn’t the place.

We ate here twice during our week in Augusta. The staff were lovely and attentive, and Shelley deserves a special mention for going above and beyond with our group last night. There was a mix-up with our order, but the service she gave us was outstanding and left us feeling good about the experience. The food was tasty and portions were generous. The chorizo and prawn pasta was delicious, and the cheesy garlic bread was a winner. Fish and chips also stood out for the quality of the fish, and a few people in our group enjoyed the different salads. The kids demolished their good-sized lasagne, and loved getting tokens for ice cream and a drink. I tried the surf and turf too. It was okay, but the steak was a bit fatty and nothing special. Can’t wait to visit again!

The view was excellent, but my roast vegetable fettuccine was only nice. The olives overpowered it and didn’t seem to belong in the dish. The serving was about half the size it should’ve been, and I heard a few other people grumbling about meal sizes too.

Helen from reception tracked me down the next morning after I’d left my wallet behind, and I’m so relieved and grateful to her and the staff member who found it and took it to the office. The day before, I’d spent hours frantically searching everywhere for it. We’d had a lovely lunch with a friend at the Augusta Hotel, with good food and a spectacular view. Thank you, Helen and the staff member who found my wallet.
