It worked out fine as a last-minute place to stay. The bed was pretty comfortable for the price, but the rooms are a little dated and there’s no air-conditioning. The electrics could use attention too, since we had a cable stretched from one corner to beside the bed for a lamp. Still, it wasn’t too bad.

I spent a week there when I was just starting my year of work and travel in Australia. It’s cosy, quiet, clean and nice, and quite different from the big dormitory hostels, which have their advantages too. One great service is that I can have all my future post sent there for free, even while I’m travelling around Australia in my car.

Ann and the staff made me feel at home every day, and helped me a lot by suggesting good things to do. The guesthouse was clean, with a great kitchen and a pool, and the location was really good. I had a lovely time there and would definitely recommend it. Good value for money.

I was happy to stay in a traditional Queenslander. My single room was simple, clean and comfortable, and over four nights and five days I never had to queue for the shared bathroom. The kitchen had everything I needed for cooking, though I also ate out. The hosts were friendly and helpful, and the price was great. There’s plenty nearby. A bus and bike rack are almost outside, and the ferry is about a 15-minute walk away. Chouquette, an amazing French patisserie, is about 25 metres down the road, with a cinema 50 metres away. Yuzu & Co is opposite the cinema, and I’d try the spicy tuna sushi. Around a 15-minute walk away, there’s a lovely tea shop, Tour de Tea, opposite Merthyr Village, plus a little bookshop with interesting gift cards. Merthyr Village also has a Coles and a very nice bakery, The Bakeologists, handy for putting together a picnic lunch for New Farm Park. It’s a relaxing neighborhood with lots to do. This was the best choice I made for a few days away. Happy holidays, everyone!
