The hostel had a really friendly, laid-back crowd, including people travelling around the country in their vans, and it was easy to meet people. There’s a pool, a room for watching movies together and two kitchens, one indoors and one outdoors. My room was clean and comfortable. I was travelling solo and really appreciated how friendly the owner, Wayne, was. He gave me some great suggestions, and I booked excursions through the hostel that I thoroughly enjoyed. When I wanted to stay local, the location was ideal, just a 15-20 minute walk from town. If I’m lucky enough to return to Cairns, I’ll stay here again.

We spent four nights in a private double room. It wasn’t the prettiest room, but it was clean and had its own fridge, though the fridge smelled extremely bad, perhaps because someone had left old food in it. The kitchen is small but modern, and we enjoyed cooking there. Staff were extremely friendly, the free billiards were nice, and the unlimited WiFi was really fast. We’d recommend this hostel for a few days in Cairns.

The owners live on site and were easily the best part of our stay. They went out of their way to help, lending us a vacuum to clean our car and even offering us rides to the airport. The location is excellent if you’re arriving in or leaving Cairns by air. The place has a down-to-earth, grimy look, but the rooms were comfortably and adequately furnished. Really great service overall, and I’d recommend it.

The owner, Wayne, really looks after guests, and we had a lot of fun during our stay at Castaways. We arrived on Wednesday, the day guests can get free pizza and a few free beers at a nightclub, and Wayne took us there with other backpackers. The cinema room is nice and usually not busy, so it’s easy to enjoy. It’s a good place to meet other travellers, with clean rooms and friendly staff. We hope to come back soon!

Wayne, the owner, is really kind and laid-back. The hostel has a friendly feel, comfy beds, a pool and a great free pool table. It’s in a lovely spot, away from the noisy parts of the city but close enough to join in whenever you want.
