Coral Tree Inn

The location worked really well, about a 10-15 minute walk to the pier and Cairns centre. Our room had everything we needed, and the price felt like great value. The pool was a nice extra, and the hotel was clean throughout. We arrived much later than expected, after reception had closed, but they had made it easy to get into our room. The staff were warm and very helpful, especially with advice about which Great Barrier Reef tours to book and which to skip. That made a real difference to our trip. The staff were the best part of this stay, easily 5/5. They sorted out several problems quickly, and some of the basics were good too: hearty breakfast, effective aircon, a nice pool, smooth after-hours check-in, and a location that's decent for the price. Still, I wouldn't recommend the place as it is now. A few basic details need attention. For all five days, the internet was unusable. Staff gave us the hotel's non-public pass to help, but in 2026 going without usable internet feels like being without power. The shower leaked and sprayed water in my face. There was shampoo and conditioner, but no liquid soap, just little wrapped bars. We had to unplug the only lamps to get power by the bed. A multi-plug would help, since guests need somewhere to charge their phones nearby. We arrived late with no staff on site and found one tiny, very flat pillow each, with just one more in the cupboard. The room was advertised with 2-3 pillows per person, so I used a pile of towels as a pillow the first night. Staff fixed it the next day. The queen bed felt small too. This wasn't a terrible stay, particularly for the price, and the staff were fantastic, but more care with basic details would make a big difference. With a few very simple, nearly free fixes, this could be a great place.

Out of all the places I stayed during my roughly three weeks in Australia, this was the one I remember most. The staff were kind and sincere, had a great sense of humor, and were helpful from the front desk through to any requests during my stay. If you skip room cleaning, you can get up to $10 per night to spend on hotel services like breakfast, drinks, or snacks. I'd definitely stay here again when I return to dive at the Great Barrier Reef. Thanks to everyone on the team for making it such a lovely stay.

The staff were friendly, and the late check-in was easy to manage after our flight arrived late. We appreciated being able to get in that way. But the stay wasn't very enjoyable, and I don't think this place meets a 4-star standard. The mattress was really uncomfortable. I suppose joining two single beds to make a double doesn't help. We also barely slept because a couple in a nearby room were shouting at each other for hours overnight. Breakfast felt overpriced at $30 for a small selection, with very little variety. The next day we ate at the 4 star Pacific Hotel Cairns, where it was $25 per person and there was much more choice. Nobody checked in with us at breakfast to see how things were going. There's plenty of room for improvement.
