Mercure Cairns

The rooms are renovated and a good size, and it was easy to find street parking nearby despite there being none onsite. The location is convenient. My only issue was the air conditioning: it has to stay set at 24 degrees, and the room didn't cool very well, so it was a little uncomfortable.

We had two rooms for our family, and both were warm. Staff said the air conditioners only worked when set to 24 degrees. We did as they told us, but they still put out only a weak stream of cool air, and sleeping became very uncomfortable. After spending the day in Cairns' tropical heat, we wanted a well-cooled room and a restful night's sleep. These rooms didn't come close.

My stays at Mercure have varied quite a bit in quality. On the most recent one, the TV kept showing a “restarting” message and I couldn't switch it on or off. There was no phone in the room, so I tried calling the hotel on my mobile several times, but nobody answered. I eventually went down to reception myself. I could hear the phone ringing there, and staff appeared to be ignoring it. It was disappointing and made getting help with an in-room problem difficult. I hope the hotel becomes more responsive and consistent, as this affected my stay.

The restaurant staff took especially good care of us, going beyond what was expected to provide safe meals for my partner's Coeliac food intolerances. We had the 'Loft', which was excellent in terms of facilities, though as someone with limited mobility I didn't like the steep stairs to the upstairs bedroom. Mercure Cairns looked after us well, and yes, I'll definitely stay again. Well-Done to everyone involved.
