We needed somewhere at the last minute and Irene was wonderful. The family unit was absolutely stunning, with water views from the lounge, and it had all the amenities and little extras we could need. It went well beyond what we expected. 10/10, we'd stay again!

Smugglers Rest is near the sea, and our two bedroom apartment had water views. I think there may be a new owner giving the motel a fresh look. Our apartment had a new coat of paint, in a nicer colour than in the older photos, and a fully equipped kitchen, which was useful since there aren't many dinner options nearby. Toiletries and fresh linens were provided. There's a heater in the living room, but none in the bedrooms; the beds do have electric blankets. I only found the communal washing machine in the shed behind the apartment when we were checking out, as we didn't see any staff during our stay. The location made it easy to get to Hastings Caves in the morning without rushing.

Nothing major was wrong with the accommodation, but a pile of small frustrations took the shine off, especially for the price. Self contained accommodation is a big plus in an area with few dining options, yet there wasn't a single condiment, not even salt, pepper or seasoning. We were given only 2 rolls of toilet paper for three nights, and the pillows are well past replacement. The bedroom and main area force you to choose between total darkness and no privacy, since the windows are only about a metre from the footpath. The curtains are too long, dirty and need replacing or rethinking. My biggest personal annoyance was the mass of laminated, passive aggressive signs telling guests what to do and not do, with spelling mistakes as well. The bathroom has been remodelled and the water pressure is great. Skirting or covers on the mattress bases and a deep clean would make a big difference.
