The owner sorted us out straight away when I explained that the upstairs room we’d booked wouldn’t work with my partner’s mobility issues and our toddler. The room was spacious, clean and seemed recently freshened up, and that huge rain shower had such good pressure I didn’t want to leave it. We stopped overnight on both the way to Melbourne and the way back, since the motel sits right on our route. Getting out in the morning takes a little planning because you can’t turn right from the driveway, but there’s a spot for a U-turn up the road. You can hear the trains and traffic, though it wasn’t as bad as I expected, and the little ones or train fans can watch trains pass from the door. The Indian restaurant was closed for renovations, so we missed out on trying it, but having Macca’s next door was handy. We’ll keep stopping here on our Melbourne trips.

The room was pretty dark, and there was nowhere to sit upright, which wasn’t great for relaxing or getting work done. On the useful side, it had a microwave, fridge and biscuits, and the bed was comfortable. The Adrian Hotel (the name attracted me) is handy for the CBD and feels like a decent budget choice in Forbes. Sleep was rough, though. The old window air-conditioner was incredibly noisy, on top of outside sounds and the nearby rail line. If you’re a light sleeper, I’d bring earplugs. Fine for a short budget stay if you can live with some noise and comfort issues.

The location caught us by surprise after we checked in. The motel sits where the railway and highway meet, so traffic kept going all night and trains passed through too. My husband is partially deaf and slept wonderfully. I got about four hours. It wasn’t the motel’s or the proprietors’ fault. Our room was comfortable, though the renovation still looked unfinished. Service was great, and the elephant-shaped towel was a welcoming touch. They may need a little more practice folding it.

The host was so nice and helpful, and the room was clean. Great shower too. It was a lifesaver of a place to stay, and the whole experience was great. I’d highly recommend it.

The owner even shifted tables and chairs over by the pool for us, then cooked tandoori chicken for dinner. Such a lovely extra. The rooms have all been renovated and look beautiful, with lovely hot showers and fluffy pillows. From the outside we weren’t sure the hotel would be much good, but the stay changed our minds. We’ll definitely be back.
