After a long day driving, it was nice to arrive at a clean, welcoming room. The rooms felt modern, with a queen bed, modern bathroom, wardrobe and suitcase space, plus a decent-sized TV and sofa. There was even a small built-in laundry, though I couldn't use it because Qantas had lost all my clothes for the week. Check-in staff were very nice and welcoming. The attached hotel restaurant served good food at a fair price. I had the lovely Thai Beef salad, and happy hour from 5-7 offered $5 schooners, wines or spirits. I left happy and would stay here again.

The rooms are great, as I’ve come to expect from the oaks, but what really makes this place stand out is the staff. Holly was especially kind and cheerful, and made extending my stay very easy. I stay at the oaks gladstone regularly and it’s been the best hotel I’ve found in Gladstone. The staff are so helpful and friendly, a real difference from people I’ve encountered at nearby hotels. I’d recommend staying here. Thanks for doing such a great job, you guys are the best.

There was an odd smell in our room, but after we politely mentioned it, the woman at the desk moved us to the 9th floor very quickly. Great service. She also arranged a taxi for us, even though Qantas changed the plans on us a couple of times. Thanks.

I had to clean the executive unit throughout my stay because it was disgusting, with dusty curtains and dirt behind the bedside tables. The staff service was poor, too. I never received the breakfast vouchers I’d paid for, so we went without food, and I had to prop the fridge door shut with a kitchen chair. The dryer door was cracked and pinched my fingers. I also got trapped in the lift and received no help from staff at all. I wouldn’t recommend it. midcity would have been a better option.

The reception staff were extremely pleasant, and I had no issue with them. The rooms were mostly clean, although many spots hadn’t been dusted. The real problem was the internet. My regular Wi-Fi speed was just 0.75 Mbps down and 0.8 Mbps up. Following the hotel’s listed policy, I contacted its ISP and tried the “priority service.” That reached 4 Mbps down at first, but despite being told it would improve, the speed dropped below 1 Mbps again. I checked the signal with a Wi-Fi analyser and found it very weak, perhaps because a distant access point was being blocked by the building. A much cheaper hotel I stayed in had Ubiquiti access points outside almost every room and speeds above 100 Mbps. The comparison isn’t about Brisbane, since Gladstone CBD has high-speed fibre optic too. At the Oaks, the connection made even basic online tasks impossible without cellular data. The listing should say “free unusable wifi with no option for upgrade.” I’ll be following up with Oaks head office.
